Because I doubt I'm writing that fast. Is there any way someone could run my document through their word counter and see if I'm crazy, or if I really am that far off? It would be helpful to know by how much, especially as we get closer to the end of the month. Thanks in advance!

What program are you using?

Microsoft Office Word 2007. It's usually pretty good, but lately I've found strange jumps in my word count when I reopen the document. It might possibly be the formatting.

This word counting tool ( www.wordcounttool.com/)gives me an identical result to FocusWriter, which tends to be within a couple of hundred words of the NaNo wordcount. From experience, MS Word is likely to be within a thousand of the same total, even over large documents. Try the online word counter - if you get a hugely different total it's something weird going on in MS word. (Might also be a good time to back up the file .)

Which reminds me -- I should back up my file.
I usually use the Scrivener word count, but the FocusWriter count seems to be pretty much identical to Scrivener's.

I"ve decided to move forward with it as is, for now, but also save a copy as a text file, in case it is the formatting that's causing the problems. At the end of the month, I'll compare the two and see how far off I am, and if it's a lot, go with the lower number.
